HIGHLY CAPABLE LEARNERS ADVOCATES REVIEW MEETING
MONDAY, JUNE 9 - 7:00 PM
LANGLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL - HCL RESOURCE/SEMINAR RM 103
Dear HCL Advocates:
Over the course of the year we have explored, planned and accomplished a lot.
Your input and participation has been essential to the current proposals for
program revision and future development. Thank you!
The multi-year strategic planning process, NAVIGATION 2020, has reached a
summit point, and contains a strong mandate for advanced learner programming;
academic rigor and creative risk taking in creating new vision for who we are to
become as a school district that truly serves the needs of all our students,
including those with the most promise for leadership in a rapidly changing world.
We have recently presented plan outlines to the District Administrative Team,
and now look forward to forming a Program Revision/Development Task Group
that will work on a 3-year design: ALPS (Advanced Learners Program/Services)
At the February meeting it was decided to pool our resources and combine our teams
into one HCL Advisory Team. On MONDAY evening, JUNE 9, we will go over the
"blue print" for future program expansion, and some specifics proposed for 2008-09.
Your input it extremely important at this juncture.
Dr. McCarthy, Mike Johnson and I, along with the whole administrative team, are excited
about the possibilities that lie ahead for Advanced Learners in our district.
A big thanks to each of you who have given of your time and energy, providing us with
ongoing reflection and advice. I hope to see you on the 28th!

WELCOME . . .
to the South Whidbey Schools Highly Capable Learners web site.
The wheels of change and improvement are turning, so this site will be evolving right along with the Highly Capable programs and services in the future. As we add links and information, please feel free to give us feedback. Your input and participation is important!
The HCL Online Forum - (thank you, Robert Marsanyi, for setting it up) - is provided for parents and HCL kids to enter into conversation about issues important to the gifted/talented learning scene.
We will be adding more HCL/GT resources to the Other Gifted Links. You may have some good ones to recommend. You can contact Bill Humphreys: bhumphreys@sw.wednet.edu

Mission Statement
To provide a positive learning environment through the Schoolwide Enrichment and Articulated Enhanced Learning Models in which all students have the opportunity to reach their highest potential as citizens who can meet the challenges of a changing global society.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the South Whidbey Schools Highly Capable Learners program is to recognize and service, with an enriched and differentiated curriculum, those students whose intellectual and creative abilities ("gifted & talented") require experiences and opportunities not always provided in the traditional course of study.
Goals
1. Provide students with the opportunity to fully master the knowledge and skills that are part of South Whidbey Schools Student Expectations.
2. Provide students with a learning environment conducive to developing and expanding their individual areas of giftedness; including opportunities to work in groups of "like- minded" learners at deeper levels or accelerated pace.
3. Provide a differentiated learning environment for students which emphasizes and expands their thinking abilities and independent learning skills.
4. Provide a program which allows opportunities for students to expand their understanding and acceptance of self and others.
5. Provide students with opportunities to solve real-life problems and to develop products and information that will be communicated to others in meaningful ways. | |
