South Whidbey High School Athletic Update

February 1, 2021

Calling All Falcons!

We are excited to be moving towards a 1st season of Falcon athletics! Our season will begin with Football turnouts on Wednesday, February 10th and Girls Soccer, Cross Country, Boys Tennis, and Volleyball turnouts on Monday, February 15th

Prior to turnouts, students must complete our SWHS Athletic Packet, including the Sports Physical information. Please fill out the packet and turn in to school office, or scan and email torbilyeu@sw.wednet.edu The packet can be found on our website at:

https://swhs.sw.wednet.edu/cms/One.aspx?portalId=466034&pageId=655948

Due to ever-changing circumstances surrounding our COVID metrics and guidelines, shortened and/or unknown limitations on competitive opportunities, we will not be charging for ASB or Pay to Play fees. And, possibly most important, we want our students/families to be able to participate in such an important social/emotional activity; our students and families have sacrificed enough since March of 2020!

Look for more information to be distributed in the coming days regarding the start of our first season!

Go Falcons!!

Hey Falcons,
Here is the latest update on High School athletic participation. At this time, we are cautiously moving
forward to start high school athletics in February. As with all things COVID, things can/will change!

falcon

We are planning to start Emerald Sound Conference play with normal fall sports, with Football beginning
practice on February 10th and Cross Country, Boys Tennis, Girls Soccer and Volleyball starting practice on
Monday, February 15th . We will have three seasons, about seven weeks long each. We have not
determined in what seasons the other sports will be offered.

The ability to actually start a season will be determined by Regional metrics from both the North and
Puget Sound Regions. Currently all Regions are in Phase 1; to compete most sports need their Region
to be in Phase 2. Specific information on these metrics can be found at “Roadmap to Recovery” at
https://www.doh.wa.gov/.

The good news is we are getting closer to having high school athletics. We will continue to update and
adjust our seasons and sports as we move forward. We know that we all would like some semblance of
a schedule that we can plan on. Unfortunately, our COVID situation does not allow for that at this time.
Our goal is to get our students playing a sport they love in a Falcon jersey!

As we continue to keep our sports options open, it is possible that if we participate in another league,
we could start our athletics with Spring sports. At this time, it is imperative that you complete a South
Whidbey Athletic packet, including a physical if you plan on participating in a Fall or Spring sport.

To complete a packet, go online to https://swhs.sw.wednet.edu/swhs/athletics/athletic_forms and fill
out a form, email it to the high school, or drop it off at the main office 7:30--2:30, M/T/Th/F. If you need
information regarding your student athlete’s current physical status, please call Ms Bilyeu at 360-221-
6808 x5423. This form/physical needs to be completed prior to a student athlete’s participation at
turnout.

If you have any questions, please contact Paul Lagerstedt at plagerstedt@sw.wednet.edu, or call at 360-
221-6808 x5408

Hey Cougars,

We/AD's have been spending a lot of time with the WIAA /Leagues working on developing a plan for HS athletics for the upcoming year. To a considerable degree these plans will help set the structure for MS athletics (ie shortened seasons).

We/WIAA/Leagues are now working on the middle school athletic year. I am confident that the structure will be similar to that of the HS. Although not confirmed, I am certain that SWMS will not be offering athletic league competition in the fall
We should have some more specific information regarding the next year's Cougar athletics in the near future. I will send out another communication when I have confirmed relevant information.
Again, safety is our primary concern, and ultimately, conditions (what Phase we/opponents are in relative to COVID 19) will determine our opportunities.
Take care, and Go Cougars!

Falcon 2020-21 Sports Schedule Update

Hey Falcons,

There has been a lot of work and conversation at State and League level around establishing a high school athletic schedule for the coming year. We want to give our kids the opportunity to be active and compete in their sport; we want them to have the opportunity to have the best high school athletic experience possible!

As of right now, we have a plan with the WIAA, and are working on league scheduling. Post seasons and playoffs are still being looked at.

For a more complete and specific breakdown, please visit the WIAA website at: https://wiaa.com/News.aspx?ID=1725&Mon=7&Yr=2020

The short version of our/SWHS plan currently is:

Season #1 (Fall)-- No athletic sport/teams offered
Season #2 (Dec. 27 thru Feb. 27th)-- G. Basketball, Boys Basketball, Wrestling, B. Swim(Co-op w Kamiak)
Season #3 (March 1 thru May 1st)--B. Tennis, Volleyball, Cross Country, G. Soccer, G. Swim(Co-op w Kamiak), Football (Feb 17th thru May 8th--more preseason practices required)
Season #4 (April 26th thru June 26th)--Fastpitch, B. Soccer, Track, Baseball, G. Tennis, B/G Golf

The WIAA will continue to adjust as needed. Again, flexibility and adjustments are the words we need to remember. We have a plan, but conditions (Phases) in our communities will dictate opportunity.

We will share more information as we go.

Take Care, Be Safe, and Go Falcons!
