February 11, 2021

Dear South Whidbey Staff, Students, Families and Community,

I hope you are healthy as we continue to fight this pandemic.

Last night, I presented the plan below to our school board and they have approved our return to face to face learning beginning February 22, 2021 (meeting agenda, minutes and video linked here).

The Island County metrics are trending down and we are in the moderate range as determined by the Washington Department of Health chart below. The disease activity level (trend in cases) has gone down over the last few weeks, the positivity rate is below 10%, and the hospitalization rate and availability of hospitalization are within the moderate limits outlined.

Given this news, the plan is to return to a face to face hybrid model as follows:

February 22 Grades 1 and 3

March 1 Grade 2

March 8 Grades 4, 5, 6

March 15 Grades 7-12

Each Principal will be working with teachers and staff to contact families and arrange for student transition. Families may also opt to remain in remote learning. Please expect communication specific to your child(ren) from the school they attend. There will be orientation activities planned as well.

Safe Return Preparedness PlanIt is imperative that we all follow the strict guidelines. Please review the SWSD Safe Return Preparedness Plan linked here and on the website. All students and staff must wear masks, keep at least 6 feet of distance, use regular hygiene, and complete health attestations, etc. STAY home if there are symptoms, exposure, etc. We will work to keep our schools COVID free. If we do have a case, we have clear direction on our response. Our schools have increased ventilation and there will be as much outside activity as possible. We expect students to dress appropriately.

It is our fervent hope that the numbers continue to decline and that our vaccination opportunities will increase. If we see an increase in disease that moves us to the HIGH range on the above chart, we will pause our return schedule while those who have returned will continue. We will work towards bringing all students back to campus safely.

Thank you again for your support and cooperation as we continue to move through these unprecedented times. Our principals provided an update to the board on all of the available supports and services for our students and families. If your child(ren) is/are struggling please reach out to your school for options that may be available for them.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jo Moccia, Superintendent
