Washington State Department of Health CoronaVirus Updates
To prevent the spread of respiratory viruses:
- Stay home when you are sick to prevent others from being exposed to your illness.
- If you see a health care provider for fever and cough, ask for a surgical mask to help prevent spread of infection when in the health care setting.
- Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and immediately dispose of the tissue.
- Wash your hands often and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Clean and disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched.

COVID-19 isolation requirements and recommendations include:
- WAC 110-300-0205: A child care/early learning provider is required to send an ill child home or reasonably separate from other children if there is a risk that the child’s illness will spread to other children or individuals.
- L&I Requirements for workplaces (updated 10/27/2022): Employers are required to “Keep employees who have tested positive or are symptomatic for COVID-19 out of the workplace for at least five days”.
- Local health officers may require mitigation measures to control the spread of COVID-19 (RCW 70.05.070, WAC 246-110-020), including the exclusion of individuals who are infectious from schools or child cares.
- Schools can incorporate COVID-19 exclusion policies into their infection control protocols.
- The Washington State Department of Health recommends that schools and child cares create and maintain policies that ensure that students, children, or staff who test positive for COVID-19 follow the DOH What to do if you test positive for COVID-19 guidance, including staying home for at least 5 days and wearing a well-fitting mask around other for a total of 10 days, especially in indoor settings.
