WELCOME!No better place to be!
I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful island summer. We have begun another great school year!
Exciting and innovative changes are underway this school year. South Whidbey Academy (9-12) moved to the South Whidbey H.S. campus. This move increases opportunities of enrichment and interventions in an alternative setting to make sure we meet the needs of all of our students. We are very pleased to have Mr. Charlie Davies assume the role of Lead Teacher at South Whidbey Academy (9-12). Mr. Davies has extensive experience in alternative education, special education, student internships and worked based learning. We are fortunate to have him in this leadership role.
We are also pleased to announce this years’ implementation of the Project Lead The Way engineering program. This program is headed by the ever talented Mr. Jeff Greene, who went through an extensive training this summer at Seattle Pacific University. PLTW provides our students with a comprehensive approach to STEM Education. Through activity, project and problem based curriculums, PLTW gives students a chance to apply what they know, identify problems, find unique solutions and lead their own learning. This will help build STEM foundations for our students so that they can be better prepared for college and careers.
I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome new staff to our campus. Mr. Mike Washington, who has been our Head Boys’ Basketball Coach for the past two years, is our new Special Education Teacher, a role that he held previously at Oak Harbor High School. Ms. Leah Tormey also joins our staff as our South Whidbey Academy English and History teacher. Although new to our campus, Ms. Tormey held this position for the past two years at the previous South Whidbey Academy campus. We also have two new paraprofessionals in our building. Please welcome Christine Amundson our Head South Whidbey Academy Secretary and Patricia Messina our new food service worker. Our family grows!
Please remember to get involved. Consider joining the PTSA, Performing Arts Booster or Athletic Booster Club. These groups raise funds that directly support our students in academics and extracurricular activities. The opportunities and enhancements that these groups provide make SWHS a special place. Do you have a special expertise or talent that you can share with our students? Just ask and we can get you involved. Please contact me at (360) 221–6808, ext. 5406, or email@example.com, if you have any questions.
