Professional Learning Community
The teaching staff in the South Whidbey School District engages in discussion about student progress, performance and needing within the context of a Professional Learning Community (PLC). The PLC concept :
An ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve. Professional learning communities operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous job-embedded learning for educators.
Teachers meet regularly in groups. The groups may be content (math, science, etc.) or grade level. Typically the conversation centers on four main questions.
What do we want students to know and be able to do?
How will we know if they learned it?
What will we do if they don’t?
What will we do if they did?
It seems simple when in fact it is the essence of what we do as educators.
