WHO:  South Whidbey School District announces its new Alternative Learning Experience (ALE),  open to all students island wide in grades kindergarten through 8th grade.

WHAT: ALE is public education in which some or all of a student’s learning happens outside of a traditional school schedule.  Families enrolled in the SW ALE have the option of registering students in some or all of our in-person ALE classes (see link to schedule below) or to provide all instruction at home or in the community, with the support and guidance of a certificated district ALE mentor teacher. The mentor teacher and the family collaborate to develop an individual student learning plan that serves as the framework of your student’s learning.

Please review our Statement of Understanding, in accordance with WAC 392-121-182(6)(j), which explains the difference between Home-Based Instruction (homeschooling), Private School and enrollment in a public school Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) program.

WHEN:The ALE program launched fall of 2021.  Registration is open now.

WHERE: From just about anywhere you want to conduct class! The SW ALE will be based at the SW Community Center, with some in-person classes available at the community center, at sites in the community, and at the elementary and middle schools for those students who would like to join in-person classes offered in those programs.

WHY: South Whidbey School District knows that there is no one model of education that can meet the educational needs of every child and every family. The SW ALE provides an option for those parents who want to continue to play a primary role in their child’s education; who seek more flexibility in their child’s education schedule; who strive to integrate more nature-based, place-based, and experiential learning in their child’s education; and/or who seek the support of a certificated mentor teacher in individualizing their child’s learning plan.

HOW: Check out the overview of our schedule of our Fall 2021 in person classes
