Maintenance & Facilities

HS/MS Gymnasium
South Whidbey School District

As you may recall, a broken pipe fixture adjoining our gym gave rise to a flood this summer in our high school/middle school gymnasium. Severe water damage from this water line break meant that we had to tear out and replace our maple floor. Because we had to remove the bleachers to tear out the floor, we also had to replace our bleachers. This work has been paid for by insurance.

However, district leadership also felt that our students, staff and community should enjoy a fully enhanced gymnasium that includes a fresh paint job on the walls and doors and new audio/video equipment. Our capital levy has funded the painting and any other enhancements beyond replacing the floor and bleachers.

At this point, the painting and installation of banners, flags and student recognition signs are nearly complete. Installation of the maple flooring is underway. In late November and early December, the new bleachers will be installed. Our hope is that the gym will be fully functional by the New Year. It has been a huge project made possible by responsive contractors, patient staff and students, as well as community partners who have shared the South Whidbey Community Center gymnasium with us. Thanks to everyone for helping us navigate this challenging time.

Roof Repairs

We are also trying to beat the atmospheric rivers in the forecast by repairing roofs in all of our buildings. We have had James King Roofing in to repair roofs at our transportation and maintenance building, as well as the high school and school district offices.

Along with HVAC repairs, we are replacing aging water heaters in each of our buildings, either that cannot wait to be replaced or are not covered under the bond. In fact, this coming week we are beginning the replacement of the water heater that serves the boys' and girls' PE locker rooms, as well as the water heater serving the North Wing of the high school/middle school campus.

In our science classrooms at the middle-high school , we had all of the stainless steel sinks upgraded with new basins, drains, valves and faucets. Many of the old sinks had corroded or stained badly. The plumbing was either leaking or not working properly. Now, all of our lab stations and teacher prep sinks work as they were originally designed.

Just a few weeks ago, we were pleased to restore lighting for the gallery in the activities hallway at the middle high school. The old, original track lighting serving that space had failed. We installed one track which now lights the displays along the back wall. We will be adding an additional track in the coming weeks.

In February, we continued to replace old elementary school classroom furniture with the VS student desks and chairs which are our district standard. This high quality furniture is able to be adjusted to accommodate different student age-groups and affords higher levels of comfort compared to some of our older furniture.

Our Maintenance Team is working tirelessly to prepare for spring sports. We recently upgraded the long-jump pits on our track to a silica sand rated for the long jump. This ensures that in a demanding sport our students will be able to jump safely with minimal impact on their bodies. Our team has also been pressure-washing the tennis courts and track facilities. In addition, we are preparing our natural grass fields for competition. This is on top of the installation of new infield top dressing on our baseball and softball fields that we undertook last summer and the upgrade to more powerful LED lighting in the stadium and grandstands.

This summer we will be continuing to update athletic facilities by resurfacing where needed. This will include resurfacing the tennis courts along Maxwelton Rd. and sanding, striping and refinishing our auxiliary gymnasium. All improvements shared in this update have been funded with capital levy dollars approved by South Whidbey voters.

We continue to upgrade fire monitoring, sprinklers and alarm systems. All of the detection devices and panels were modernized at the elementary school in November. Old or damaged devices were replaced at the middle-high school. During spring break, most of the horn strobes at the elementary school will be replaced with new strobes. At the same time, we will be replacing old sprinkler heads that no longer meet code. This will complete the modernization. In addition, we have consolidated our monitoring service at the elementary school with one company that provides responsive, comprehensive service districtwide.

At our water plant, we have built upon our five-year DoH Sanitary Survey to begin the process of improving water distribution and treatment. This fall, we replaced the pumps that provide water to the schools, along with a new chlorine analyzer and monitoring system. This is the first step in doing a wholesale assessment and modernization of our water system. We are currently in discussion with an engineering firm to undertake this work.

The improvements supported by our capital levy have been significant this past year and more numerous than can be captured in a brief update. Thanks to community support of the levy, we are improving our facilities every day. Thank you for your partnership.

Facilities Improvements Underway

Our gymnasium is not the only facility or space that is getting a facelift. Many other projects are underway, funded by the capital projects levy.

Over the next week you will see a large boom lift in the stadium. This major piece of equipment is making it possible for Jon Forsberg of Java Electric and Urban Energy Group to replace all of the stadium lighting with brighter, more efficient LED fixtures. We are hoping that on the 25th, our players, families and community will enjoy the football game under new, modern lights on the field and in the grandstands.

We had a crane on the high school campus last week raising a large coil onto the roof, designated for the HVAC unit over the auditorium. Along with repairing this unit, we have been repairing all of the units districtwide in a comprehensive repair project that will ensure heating and cooling until we replace most of these units and control systems under the bond.
