The South Whidbey School District has a vacancy for an interested parent or citizen to serve on the School Board of Directors as an AT LARGE member. All citizens are invited to nominate candidates for this position, provided that the nominees are registered voters in South Whidbey and who reside within the South Whidbey School District.

The South Whidbey School District Board usually meets twice monthly unless otherwise stated. All meetings are normally held in the Community Board Room on the South Whidbey Elementary School Campus, 5380 Maxwelton Road, Langley, WA 98260, unless otherwise stated (SUMMER 2026 MEETINGS ARE LOCATED AT THE LANGLEY LIBRARY, Room 104 Second St Langley, WA 98260). The monthly Board Workshop is held on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The Workshop is generally used for more detailed discussion of issues, board business, building reports, staff presentations, etc. requiring more time than would be possible at the Business Meeting. Action is taken at the Board Business Meeting and may be taken at a Special Business Meeting on a Workshop date. The Regular Board Business Meeting is held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. These meetings are used for board communications, business, and administration.

Public participation is an integral part of successful schools. Meeting agendas are prepared by the board chair and superintendent and are available on our web site prior to meetings. Our specific goals for 2026-2027, adopted by the Board on June 24, 2026 are:

Goal 1: Social-Emotional Learning
We will deepen our school culture of care and belonging with particular attention to systems, practices, and intra- and interpersonal capacities. Each individual will be valued within and accountable to the school community.

• Pillar 1: Foster a culture that builds resilience and pride of place among students so that they feel safe and that they belong in order to learn, educate, and grow.
• Pillar 2:Foster a culture that builds resilience and pride of place among staff so that they feel safe and that they belong in order to learn, educate, and grow.

Goal 2: Academic Growth

We will expand and hone our use of best practices that nurture and create innovative learning environments. We will support resiliency and growth in every student, especially those historically underserved, building to success in the future they choose.

• Pillar 1: Ensure high-quality core instructional practice focused on data-informed instruction with continued emphasis on math instruction.
• Pillar 2: Implement Special Education program review recommendations as best fits our district.
• Pillar 3: Gather understanding of instructional and non-instructional technology use at each school.

Goal 3: Logistics
We will facilitate long-term district success with equitable student outcomes and staff well-being in mind through mission-aligned and discerning stewardship and use of district assets (land, facilities, people, money, institutional knowledge, and time) in this time of transition.

• Pillar 1: Minimize impact of disruptions from bond construction work.
• Pillar 2: Continue deepening and expanding community partnerships and communication.
• Pillar 3: Monitor and minimize educational impact of state and federal budget squeezes.
• Pillar 4: Prepare for an update to the district strategic plan.
