Special Education

Referrals

The Special Services Department supports programs for special education. South Whidbey School District serves students, ranging from the ages of 3 to 21, who have been identified as eligible for special education services.

Access to all special education services is through a formal referral and evaluation team assessment process. Once an evaluation team determines that a student has a disability that has an adverse educational impact and that the student requires specially designed instruction, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed to meet the needs of the individual student.

Program Descriptions

Children ages 3 - 5, not yet in Kindergarten
This program serves three to five year olds with a wide range of developmental delays. Communication, adaptive and social skills development are an integral part of the curriculum in providing early intervention and preparing students for kindergarten. 

South Whidbey Elementary - North Campus - Elementary Resource Room Program (Grades K-2 & Grades 3-5)
K-12 Resource Model is a service delivery model that serves identified special education students. Specially designed instruction may be provided in the general education classroom or in a specialized setting.  Students in this classroom are served in specially designed instruction in the areas of reading, written language, math, and social/emotional needs.

South Whidbey Middle School - Middle School Resource Room Program (Grades 6-8)
K-12 Resource Model is a service delivery model that serves identified special education students. Specially designed instruction may be provided in the general education classroom or in a specialized setting.  Students in this classroom are served in specially designed instruction in the areas of reading, written language, math, and social/emotional needs.

South Whidbey High School - High School Resource Room Program (Grades 9-10)

Specially designed instruction may be provided in the general education classroom or in a specialized setting.  Students in this classroom are served in specially designed instruction in the areas of reading, written language, math, and social/emotional needs.

South Whidbey Middle/High School Life Skills Program (Grades 6-12)
This program serves middle school and high school students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities that require alternative curriculum approaches. Many students are lacking basic self care, protection, and communication skills. Some students have serious behavioral challenges in addition to their other needs. The program provides a range of services as appropriate for individual students. These may include functional academics, community based learning, basic needs, functional communication and pre-vocational curriculum.   This program also serves our students aged 18-21 years old. This program was developed to address transition from public school to community services, employment, housing, and recreation. Its focus is on developing employment and community access skills through community-based experiences. Students are individually scheduled in a mixture of community and transition based activities.  The amount and time of service is determined through the IEP process.

South Whidbey Related Services
This program serves our students needs with occupational therapy, vision services, speech language therapy, school psychological services, and school health services.
